Buckhorn Construction
Buckhorn Construction has a reliable projects management process.

Our process

Construction project can be daunting. Our focus on simplicity and transparency seeks to take as much stress as possible out of the building journey. Here is the Buckhorn process:

  1. Initial introductions

  2. Identify the general scope of the project

  3. Walk the job or meet with the client to define the full set of requirements

  4. Discuss building process and timelines

  5. Engage architecture and engineering services if needed

  6. Provide a cost estimate

  7. Contract and down payment

  8. Web portal to manage project 24/7

Every client is different. We appreciate that everyone has different goals and priorities. We embraced those differences by shaping our process around your expectations.

All project start with an initial concept meeting. From that point, we develop a rough scope of work and determine what other team members are required. We work with a proven team of architects, structural engineers, interior designers, and another specialists. Once we have a detailed scope of work, we provide fixed-price cost estimate and timeline. We are also happy to work under a cost-plus or contract management arrangement, which some clients prefer.

Any changes to the project scope that would increase the cost of the project are discussed beforehand and documented in detail. During the project you receive regular updates in a format that works for you (e.g., online portal, email, phone call, or site visit).

We use the Buildertrend online project management system to provide real-time update on project scope, timeline, and financials.

If you prefer a different approach we can email a project summary at regular intervals, update you over the phone, or just walk you through the job site. We typically use a combination digital and in-person meetings depending on the stage of the project.

Frequent Questions & Answers

  • Buckhorn typically works in Arlington, Falls Church, McLean, Alexandria, western DC, and eastern Fairfax. We work in other areas by exception.

  • Buckhorn does all types of residential maintenance and construction. We fix leaky faucets, replace windows, create new kitchen and bathroom, renovate one or all rooms, drop basements, build new houses from scratch, and carry out landscaping projects from a few plants to entire custom designed spaces.

  • No renovation is the same. Costs can range from $100 to $300 per square foot.

  • Aside from the land, building a new 5,000 sq ft home with mid/high grade finishes and fixtures typically costs in the neighborhood of $250 per sq ft. However, the price often ranges from low $200s to upwards of $300/sq ft depending on appliances, flooring, window/door selections, and other choices.

  • 12-18 months from signing a contract with an architect is a good rule of thumb. Design changes, permitting delays, utility delays, site conditions, and weather typically have the greatest impact on the schedule. The actual build process typically runs 9-12 months.
